Taking Care of Your Smoke Detector

Smoke detectors save lives, and all they ask in return is a bare minimum of maintenance. Here are a few tips to keep your smoke detector in good condition
  • Test it monthly by holding a candle six inches beneath it. For an ionization detector, let the flame burn. To test a photoelectric detector, snuff the candle and let the smoke drift into the detector. The unit’s alarm should begin to sound within 20 seconds.

  • Keep fresh batteries on-hand and replace the battery twice a year. Also keep replacement lamps for photoelectric detectors.

  • Don’t “play” with your detector. It should not be operated or even touched except to test and maintain it or as part of a family fire drill. Do not let your children use it as a toy or set off false alarms for fun.

  • In the event of “nuisance alarms” caused by cooking or fireplace smoke, do not disconnect the battery. Either fan away the smoke or relocate the detector.
