Smoke detectors save lives, and all they ask in return is a bare minimum of maintenance. Here are a few tips to keep your smoke detector in good condition
Test it monthly by holding a candle six inches beneath it. For an ionization detector, let the flame burn. To test a photoelectric detector, snuff the candle and let the smoke drift into the detector. The unit’s alarm should begin to sound within 20 seconds.
Keep fresh batteries on-hand and replace the battery twice a year. Also keep replacement lamps for photoelectric detectors.
Don’t “play” with your detector. It should not be operated or even touched except to test and maintain it or as part of a family fire drill. Do not let your children use it as a toy or set off false alarms for fun.
In the event of “nuisance alarms” caused by cooking or fireplace smoke, do not disconnect the battery. Either fan away the smoke or relocate the detector.
