A Safer Home for People with Dementia

The world can be a frightening place for sufferers of dementia. Here are a few tips to help make your home as safe and comforting as possible for them:

  • Keep the environment uncluttered. Arrange furniture simply and consistently.

  • Remove loose rugs and seal up carpet edges that may cause trips/falls.

  • Add nightlights in the hallways and bathrooms.

  • Dispose of all old medications and hazardous materials.

  • Electric blankets and hot water bottles can be a safety hazard for a person with dementia and should be removed.

  • Coffee makers and similar appliances should have automatic cut-offs.

  • Check smoke detectors for charged batteries and make sure the alarm is loud enough.
